Insights from Sarah: Poverty as a State of Mind

We're close now, right? It's been a few weeks since these Thursday posts began and I feel we've grown in our relationship. Hopefully you have enjoyed the little snippets into my crazy brain and the issues that I ponder and wrestle with on a daily basis. So today, let's get a little uncomfortable. Let's talk about money. Still with me?  To get the full effect pop over to Global Rich List and enter your income. The result will give you a comparison of your income level versus the rest of the globe. I learned that I am in the top 1.83% of the richest people in the world. And I work for a non-profit organization! What about you? If you bring...

Happy International Women's Day!

I know I'm a day late to the game... but I was celebrating International Women's Day yesterday instead of blogging! What an incredible day it was yesterday with such amazing women... here's a glimpse into some of the girls and women I've met and loved on this trip!  This year's theme for International Women's Day is "Make it happen" - and that's just what I plan to do!!

JustOneKenya2015: Day 7

Today is day one of traveling home. We woke up early and started the long drive to Entebbe. I love watching the countryside sights as we drive (in between me napping!). Our driver, Godfrey, was such a great driver and so much fun - made the drive that much more enjoyable. We did have someone bump us and end up in the ditch - but it was minor and quickly on our way. JustOneKenya2015: Day 6

When I'm meeting with new artists - there's always that bit of doubt in my mind. What if it's not a connection? What if their work isn't something we'd want to carry? What if I just flew from Kenya to Uganda, then drove for 8 hours and it's a disappointment?  Well, any doubt I had was soon gone the second I met these women briefly last night and then through our time together today. I had met Ketty online through some random connections - she is a fashion designer with some amazing purses we will be carrying! She mentioned she had just met some vulnerable women from the LRA who were looking for someone to help them sell their designs. I told...

JustOneKenya2015: day 4 and 5

Yesterday I did not have a chance to go into much detail on the day... even now my computer battery is near dead so I'll be briefer than I would want to be.  Friday, we started at 7am heading down to Kibera slums and meeting early with our friends to prepare to go apply for birth certificates. We did not return back until 6om! A long day. The process is crazy - it had us travelling all over the city centre by bus, matatu, foot and even boda boda from office to office. The hoops they have to jump through and all the steps... crazy!! But after several hours of filling out forms with people who don't know their birthdate (trying...
