Fire in Kibera

On May 15, a fire ripped through Kibera slums in Kenya... coming so close to our friends at SEED school (within 50meters!). At the end - 37 homes were destroyed and 17 students at SEED school were included in those who had lost everything. Homes. Clothes. Belongings. We are fortunate there were no fatalities although there were some injuries. It is such a tragedy here when there is a fire - but for those who already owned so little and struggled for everything they did own - this loss is felt even more deeply.  Neighbours had rushed in to help as best they could - but with the tightness of the homes and no direct path to water it was too...

JustOne Person: Melissa

Note from Krista: Melissa and I have known each other for years - I love her commitment to her cause - even when it's difficult. Her decision to shop only second hand, local or handmade (which JustOne falls into - whew!) is inspiring. Reading through her responses - I feel motivated to make changes too! In her photo you'll notice Melissa is wearing a JustOne necklace - she made this comment when she sent me the photo: "Picked one where I'm wearing a Just One necklace...wasn't hard to find since I'm almost ALWAYS wearing it." Thanks Melissa for all you do to impact our world! Check out her blog HERE JustOne Introduction:   I am a soon-to-be-no-longer-single Mom to 3 amazing, energetic...

Sarah's Insights: Child Marriage

My heart broke for a pregnant 10 year girl in Paraguay this week. There are no easy answers in a situation where a child is raped and conceives as a result. On a side note, over 700 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth in Paraguay last year. What?! You can read about this little girl and her story HERE. After reading about Paraguay, I ended up hopping from story to report to story about adolescent girls and poverty. Any idea how much of every dollar directed by the global community for international development goes towards adolescent girls? Less than two cents. Even more staggering, a 2013 UN report states that 2 million births that year were to mothers...

Katie's Fashion Tips: Maxi Dresses

If you're aiming to look casual and chic, a maxi dress is the perfect choice. Maxi dresses are totally trendy, and totally comfortable. You can take the same dress from backyard barbecue to a night out simply by adding a few signature jewellery pieces. I chose to wear my full length black maxi to enjoy a quiet afternoon visiting with family, and then dressed it up with my favourite necklace, the Chevron Bone and Brass, to head out for the evening.       Katie and her husband have three young children that keep them active and enjoying life.  She is a professional photographer and a former journalist and newspaper editor. Katie has been involved with choosing which items to carry for JustOne and helping with designing...

Bryan's View: Memories

I grew up in this widespread village of Kibera called Gatwekera. It was the only place on earth I knew back then and I can recollect all the memories I have had in this place and the exclusive slum of Kibera. I mean Gatwekera was the place where everything used to happen. It was the core-epicenter of life and all the good and bad that could happen in Kibera and for instance if anything did not happen in Gatwekera then it probably would never happen. But let’s consider all the aspects and let me start with a brief history of Kibera as I was told by my mum and this is what she said, “We came to Kibera in 1978 from...
